Brantford is the best walking city in Ontario according to the Canadian Federation of Podiatric medicine. Brantford City Council was one of the first in Ontario to endorse the International Charter for Walking, and Mayor Mike Hancock signed it in October 2007 as part of a city-wide commitment to supporting the proclamation of walking month in the city.  The signed charter is now on prominent display in the downtown public library. Since the Walkability Roadshow came to town in April 2007, Brantford has established a Walkability Task Force, a local newsletter, the Walkolution News, and is an active participant in the both the Transportation Safety and the Multi Use Trails and Bikeway Committees. The progress made by Brantford has inspired the County of Brant to establish a walkability task force and the County Council is reviewing the International Charter for Walking to fit within a rural context. They have hosted several public events to raise the profile of the county task force and walking in general. In 2009, they will be continuing work to engage County Council, Staff and other key community stakeholders and also plan to develop a rural-specific social marketing campaign to educate and mobilize residents.
