The Communities in Action (CIA) Group works with local organizations, residents, schools and councils to create healthy, active communities through active transportation planning, promotion and policy. The CIA has developed Active Transportation Plans for the Town of Minden and the Village of Haliburton (www.haliburtoncooperative.on.ca/CIA/our-projects), and works cooperatively with the Haliburton Highlands Cycling Coalition to promote and plan for improved conditions for cycling in the county (Cycling Master Plan). Through a number of small grants, they have engaged municipal councils in AT policy development and planning initiatives; hosted focus groups, community forums and transportation demand management workshops; developed a ‘Walk, Bike & Be Active’ map and signage for Minden and Haliburton; and worked on a plan for a trail to provide an active and safe route from downtown Haliburton to schools, the medical centre and hospital. Members of the CIA have made presentations about their work at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Sustainable Communities Conference, the Ontario Bike Summit and the Sustainable Mobility Summit of the Association for Commuter Transportation of Canada. In 2010, Haliburton and Minden received the Ontario Walkability Award of Excellence from Green Communities Canada in the rural category. www.mindenhills.ca/whats_new.html
