Region of Waterloo

The Region is developing an Action Plan for active and sustainable transportation, as a collaborative effort of Public Health and Transportation Planning/Engineering. The Action Plan will cover promotion, education, infrastructure, and research as well as identify gaps between the existing transportation plan and this new AT/ST plan. The Region has earmarked $10M to kick-start a 10 year initiative in 2009 to retrofit sidewalks on all regional roads. Currently work is underway to identify missing pedestrian links and prioritizing them – a major one was identified that resulted in a connection being made between an arterial and a collector road to provide better and more direct transit access.

On April 18, 2011, the Council for the City of Waterloo approved in principle the Transportation Master Plan that includes a Complete Streets policy. We understand it to be the first in Ontario and believe it makes Waterloo the first municipality in Canada to adopt a Complete Streets policy making active transportation an integral part of their municipal transportation system.

The Waterloo District School Board adopted an active transportation charter on May 16, 2011:
