Ontario Communities walkON |
Between 2009 and 2011, with the support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, and the Ministry of Health Promotion's Healthy Communities Fund, Green Communities Canada, in collaboration with 8-80 Cities and walkON spearheaded Ontario Communities walkON, a program that helped make more than 50 Ontario cities and towns in all four regions of the province more walkable.
The project involved holding community forums, train-the-trainer sessions and walkability workshops with municipal staff and decision makers, and community stakeholders. The project was successful in reaching its two goals:
- Helping communities to improve policies, programs and infrastructure to increase walking as a means of active transportation, and
- To develop the Canada Walks as a centre of excellence for all things related to walkability, and building our capacity to continue our work.
Canada Walks would like to thank all of the community partners involved in the project for their work to bring key people together in their communities and for sharing their enthusiasm for creating more walkable spaces and places in Ontario.
Guiding this project is the comprehensive resource created by walkON to facilitate the creation of powerful change at the community level the walkON Walkability Toolkit, updated January 2009 as part of the Ontario Communities walkON project:
